How to Care for Your Ceramic Mugs So They Last for Years
Good ceramics can last a lifetime with a little care. These simple habits keep glazes glossy, painted details crisp and handles strong.
Wash gently
Hand washing with warm water and a mild dish soap is the kindest option, especially for hand-painted, metallic or textured pieces. Use a soft sponge rather than steel wool or abrasive pads.
Check before the dishwasher or microwave
Every piece is different. Many everyday mugs are fine in the dishwasher and microwave, but pieces with metallic accents, lids, decorations or delicate glazes may not be. Always check the product description first, and when in doubt, hand wash.
Avoid thermal shock
Sudden temperature changes are the most common cause of cracks. Don't pour boiling water into a mug straight from the fridge, and don't put a hot mug into cold water. Warming the mug with a little hot tap water first is a great habit.
Remove coffee and tea stains naturally
Make a paste of baking soda and a few drops of water, rub it gently over the stain with a soft cloth, then rinse. It lifts most marks without harming the glaze.
Store with space
Avoid stacking mugs with handles or decorations that can knock together. A little space on the shelf prevents chips.
